Wonders of Kenya

December 5–13, 2018

Escorted by Denise Bonnell

Visiting:  Nairobi, Aberdare Mountains, Sweetwaters Game Reserve, Lake Elementeita, Lake Nakuru National Park, Masai Mara Game Reserve

Properly planned, an African safari is far more than a mere vacation – it is a profound and enriching experience!  To encounter vast numbers of wild animals of every size and description, free in a natural habitat virtually unaltered from its primeval state, is a thrilling sensation that excites the senses.

Perhaps even more astounding than the sights and sounds of wild Africa, however, is the spirit of adventure and self-discovery that seems to nourish one’s raison d’ etre.  Herein lies the mystique of Africa and the essence of being on safari, an experience that has inspired countless books and films and prompted so many travelers to return again and again.

These words inspired me to go on my very first safari 25 years ago.  The first place we visited, on my first safari to Kenya, was a lodge in the Aberdare Mountains.  It was quite amazing to watch a leopard drink from the water hole below us in the middle of the night.  This is why I decided to make the Aberdares our first stop on this safari.  We will be staying at the very beautiful and historical Serena Mountain Lodge.  It is 2,134 meters above sea level (7,000 ft.) in dense rainforest draping the slopes of Mt. Kenya.  From there we will drive to Sweetwaters, one of my favorite tented camps in the Sweetwaters Game Reserve.  This is one of the few places you can go on a night game drive.

After our visit at Sweetwaters, we head northwest towards Nyahururu. We then continue south to Lake Elementeita Tented Camp for two nights.  It is during our stay there that, if we are lucky, we will get to see thousands of flamingos.  We will also go for a morning game drive in Lake Nakuru National Park

Last, but not least, we will be spending three nights at the Mara Serena Lodge in the Masai Mara Game Reserve.  Because of the Mara’s varied landscape (from forests to open plains), it supports a great variety of wildlife.  You will almost certainly see the Big Five here – lion, buffalo, elephant, leopard and rhino.  You will also see an abundance of plains game, among them wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, topi, and gazelle.

COME EXPLORE AFRICA!
